What is Asbestos?
Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral that was widely used in construction materials due to its strength, heat resistance, and insulating properties. However, exposure to asbestos fibers can lead to serious health risks, including lung diseases such as asbestosis, lung cancer, and mesothelioma.
Types of Asbestos:
There are six types of asbestos minerals classified into two categories: serpentine and amphibole.
Chrysotile (White Asbestos):
The most commonly used type of asbestos, found in ceilings, walls, floors, and roofs.
Amosite (Brown Asbestos):
Often used in cement sheets, insulation boards, and pipe insulation.
Crocidolite (Blue Asbestos):
Known for its durability and resistance to heat, commonly found in spray-on coatings and pipe insulation.
Anthophyllite:
Limited commercial use, found in products such as insulation and cement.
Tremolite:
Occurs as a contaminant in other asbestos minerals and certain building materials.
Actinolite:
Rarely used commercially, found as a contaminant in some construction materials.
